Gippsland Contemporary Art Group exhibition opening this Saturday.

The art group I am in has created some unique portraits of inspiring local people by dividing up the image and then each artist painted his/her portion in their own style. The pieces are then put back together. Each time we have done one we are always amazed at the end result.

Had a really satisfying moment art wise yesterday, I delivered a commissioned piece (Q series style) to the clients house. It was very gratifying to be there when the whole family was introduced to the finished piece. The unexpected best part for me was that I now know where my painting will sit. Sounds strange, but often I really miss the paintings when they are sold. I guess this comes down to the artist putting parts of their soul into their work.

My fun with a Van Eyck
I had so much fun creating this piece, I realize it could be seen as kitsch, but sometimes you need to smile at stuff.
It is now residing happily at Raeshaws at Fulham along with three other pieces ( for sale of course). Its a beautiful restaurant that follows the slow food movement from paddock to table. It is a family run establishment and has a great feel to it. www.raeshawsatfulham.com.au

A very productive week. I have a piece in the “She Who Can” art prize at the Walker St Gallery, Dandenong, working on my fourth piece to add to the “Q Series” for the walls of a local restaurant, my Archibald entry of Mary-Anne Fahey is now in Sydney, ready for judging and hopefully inclusion in the prize and lastly celebrating the successful first exhibition of the Gippsland Contemporary Art Group of which I am a member. Am wondering what I ever did prior to taking up art 6 years ago.
I will post the new pieces when I finish this last one.

On the look out for my next scratchboard piece. I really miss this medium when I havent got one on the go. Have finished my next Archibald entry of Mary-Anne Fahey and will post pic when she has seen it.
Meanwhile am still painting pieces of light hearted stuff in my other persona of cafe artist so I can change over works currently held in a local cafe. Yes, I know this is shamefully commercial, but I need to lighten up occasionally or the black dog of depression scratches at my door.

I have sat in this cafe incognito and have seen and heard people appreciate the art just for what it is. And that is so much better than all the Prozac in the world and the income pays for the materials so I can do my more serious stuff.

Definition of success

How do you define the success of a piece of your work. Do you judge success as sales, or by the amount of !!!!s that’s your admirers post on your website?

I have a completely different definition of success. If I feel the emotion of the work as it is being done or when I look at it, then it is a success. I always strive for a strong dialogue between me and the piece. That’s all I need.

Now done but. I will post in a day or so after I have varnished it. Success also in making a light box to get a decent pic of my scratchboard work.
I’ve just been accepted as an active member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists as well so I definitely have to do a better job of taking pics.
